I recently saw my first Bushmaster Armpistol and have been digging for info on it's history. The manual says they were made as registered NFA's as well as semi's. Gwinn Firearms made them, went bankrupt, reformed as Bushmaster (changed the upper receiver) made some more than stopped. They also made the Bushmaster Rifle. looking at the parts breakdown and the manual available online, How did they function on full auto? They have an M-16 Hammer, disconnector, (selector switch) and I'm guessing an Auto-sear, but the bolt carrier ends at the firing pin so there is nothing to trip an auto-sear. There is no large rear buffer assembly because of the AK gas system. (the bolt carrier bounces off a little piece of rubber mounted on the rear of the lower receiver). Bushmaster's techy says he has no record that they ever made any Select-fire but the Manual gives the operation and rate of fire specs. I'd love to get one of these if a Registered Lightning link or Registered DIAS or a Registered unmarried Auto-Sear would work(if they even exist anymore. Didn't they all have to be married to a Receiver in '86?)
The gas system design appears to be far superior (cleaner, faster and more reliable) than what was adopted in the M-16. They recommend cleaning the bolt after every 10,000 rounds (wouldn't that be nice?). When AR bullpups & pistols became the new craze, It had already been done better back in the 70's. The Armpistol sights really are terrible though, (thank God for Green lasers and Picatinny Rails!). Picatinny, (who in the hell came up with that name anyway? Is it Gay or is it a Racial Slur? It's neither, Its a Weapon Accessory Mounting System. Somebody needs to fix that!
